Overview

From Roots to Revolution is an immersive education experience exploring the intersection of textured hair, culture, identity, and care. Grounded in trauma-informed practice and cultural awareness, this session invites hair professionals, educators, and creatives to rethink the way we approach curly, coily, and Afro-textured hair in salons, classrooms, and community spaces. Through storytelling, lived experience, practical learning, and critical conversation, participants will deepen their understanding of the textured hair diaspora, the politics and history of hair, and the importance of inclusive, culturally safe practices within the beauty industry. This session is designed to inspire meaningful change — moving beyond trends and tokenism toward equity, representation, and empowered hair education for future generations.

Key learning outcomes for attendees:

  • Understand the Cultural Significance of Hair
  • Explore how textured, curly and Afro hair connects to identity, ancestry, resistance, and self-expression.
  • Gain insight into the historical and social impacts of hair discrimination and beauty standards within the industry.

Build Cultural Awareness & Inclusive Practice

  • Recognise unconscious bias and gaps within traditional hair education.
  • Learn how to create safer, more inclusive experiences for clients with textured and Afro hair.
  • Develop greater confidence in culturally respectful consultation and communication.
